Carrot?

When I was a kid if we weren't at the lake or on the 3 wheelers, we would spend Saturday's cleaning the yard, stacking wood or getting the cooler working or winterized. I hated it! I think mostly because my Dad was always so mad at us. I swore I would never make my kids do that. I mostly don't. But Saturday I decided that the yard was in some major need of cleaning. I knew it wasn't going to get done unless I did it myself. I put the kids to work. Here are just a few of the comments I heard from them.

  • How long are we going to do this?
  • When are we going to eat lunch?
  • Can I go to the bathroom?
  • Can I get a drink?
  • It is too hot.
  • The garbage is full.
  • I can't do that.
  • I can't do that either.
  • I need to go to the bathroom again.
  • The phone is ringing in the house should I answer it?
Seriously. I have done my kids a total disservice. None of them know how to work. I understand why my Dad was always so MAD at us. Carter decided the only he could do was pick up garbage. The girls decided to weed the garden.

I always get really excited about a garden in the spring. This year I planted a bunch of stuff, but only tomato's and Peas came up. Then it got too hot and no Peas. While the girls were weeding I hear, "A CARROT?" I looked over and McKinley was holding a carrot. I guess one carrot seed grew. We didn't even know because there were too many weeds!!

So, now our backyard went from Total White Trashy to a Little Trashy. Hopefully this week will bring a little more improvements.

Only in your yard could you find a rogue carrot growing. I wonder what else is lurking just beneath the surface? Hmmm.

And mostly I remember Dad always being mad at us, too. Do you remember stacking wood? Oh, how I hated that. The slivers in our forearms. The worst! But whenever I have my kids do yard work, I find myself saying the same things dad used to say to us! It drives me crazy!

One carrot?!? That's what would happen if I spent my time gardening. A little disappointing and yet funny too. And those comments from the kids sound very familiar. It gets so frustrating. Ugh!

It's good to know my kids are not the only whiners. It is so hard to teach them good work ethic. My dad was the same way, always finding jobs for me to do. I find myself doing the same thing now and I have to laugh.

Dad was ALWAYS mad about something! Could be that he has to make us do everything the HARDEST way possible, BUT, to his defense, he did teach us to work. Except me, I got the riding lawnmower.

I hear ya - I get so frustrated with my kids when it comes time to do chores and all the excuses they come up with and I think the same thing, "have I taught these kids anything about work?" I So glad I'm not the only one!

Isn't it nice to have your own slave labor. Now if only we really taught them the meaning of teh word Labor. I know I haven't done a good job with my kids. I am more the slave then them. It is my own fault, I always think, I'll just do it its a lot faster and way less painful.

Enjoy the laborers complaining while you have them. My yard is totally trashed and needs a serious cleaning this weekend too, only it will just be me. You'll miss the slave labor when they leave! Now I just get to wait another 20 years till they come back 'cause grandma's really old and needs help with the yard'. I can hardly wait :)
