Being self employed = crappy insurance. Meaning no dental, high premium health insurance costs that don't really cover much. I'm going to end here because the ranting ranks right up there with the President of our United States. U-hum.
I'm going to tell you about the no dental part. This is where the confession comes in. I haven't really ever taken my kids to the dentist unless they complain about something. Then I only get done just the serious stuff. They lose most of them anyway right? Well, about a year and a half ago Aflac started offering dental with their policies. It was a little pricey, but my opinion on it was get it, get them all fixed up and get rid of it. At that point I could handle paying for the cleanings and few cavities here and there. We started with Carter because I knew he was the worst. Moved on to Olivia, the next worst. They both had so much work to be done that when the original work was done it was time for their cleaning again! But my insurance covered everything except the sedation for Olivia. Last week I took Gracie. I knew she had some cavities because I could see them. I know this kid brushes because I have to do it. 6 cavities, one of which is a root canal. She's 2! My kids have horrible teeth!
Yesterday was Olivia's cleaning and McKinley's first check up/cleaning. Olivia went first, one small cavity, no sedation. Whew! Not to bad. Then McKinley went. I walked back to her room to check on her. The Hygienist said she has GREAT teeth. Great teeth? Did I hear that right? Great? No cavities, no braces, nothing. The best part is that the hygienist asked her when the last time she went to the dentist was. McKin said, "Mom, I didn't know what to say. I've never been before!" She told her it had been a while. I feel like I tricked all those dentists. Ha Ha! She has perfect teeth and has never stepped inside a dentist office in all her 11 years! But then again, I have spent the last year getting all the other kids fixed!
Nonetheless, I am thankful for my Aflac policy and I think I will be keeping it.

Ugh. We have no dental insurance either. My kids have not been to the dentist in two years. I am scared to take them in. Anyway, a trick that our old dentist told me was to make them brush their teeth every night - he said that is much more important than the morning brushing. And after they brush with tooth paste, make them dip their brush in anti-cavity mouthwash and brush with that (not swish it in their mouth - it doesn't work as well). Then no drinks afterwards until morning. I just bought the cheapo kid bubblegum mouthwash and did that faithfully every night. Six months later... no cavities! It was the first time none of them had a cavity. Now I am the mouthwash nazi at our house!
don't you have like a hundred dentists in your family? Come on, family is family right?!BTW I'm going to try the dip your toothbrush thing-sounds good to me!
I like the dip the toothbrush thing, too! Makes so much sense. And yeah, I'm pretty sure Dr. Matt would work out a deal for you. He's nice like that. ;)
I know how you feel Jill! When Kayt was 4 remember 3 root canals and 8 silver caps!! It was horrible and cost a fortune. I just took all 3 for their cleaning this week and not one had a cavity!! It was the best day ever. (Except for Hanna throwing a fit!) I hate dentists! Way to go Kinney!
I will have to try the mouthwash trick too! I totally know how you feel. Self employed - no dental insurance, etc! I take my kids to have their teeth cleaned twice a year and then exams and xrays only once a year. My kids have been lucky and had good teeth and I think the regular cleanings help. My sister cleans their teeth for me and writes that I am a cheapskate in their charts when I don't get the exams! I think it's funny. She's a dork! Good luck!
OF COURSE Kin has perfect teeth!! She is the perfect child. :)
6 for Gracie, huh? That sucks.
You come by not taking your kids to the dentist naturally. I don't think I went consistantly until I got dental insurance 5 years ago!
Tell Aaron to join the Chamber of Commerce. He can get affordable health/dental that is very reasonable. It just saved our firm thousands/year. --Andrew
